Community Involvement

Lake Effect Leaders encourage members to get involved with the community during their term of service.  Members are often sought out by community organizations as volunteers or participants for an event.  This type of involvement helps raise awareness of our project and enables Leaders to network with a variety of local organizations.  Members may participate in different events each year, but some are annual events for our Lake Effect Leaders:

Poverty Simulation
2015-2016 Leaders volunteer for Erie Together's Poverty Simulation to help participants have a better understanding of the difficulty of breaking the cycle of poverty.

Community Workshop on Nutrition
The VISTA at Gannon Goodwill Garden created a workshop series for the community on healthy eating. The final workshop for the year was held October 2015, and community and VISTA members attended to learn about super foods that can boost your immune system.

Cardboard Boat Regatta
Each year, the Bayfront Maritime Center hosts an event called the Cardboard Boat Regatta.  Participants have the opportunity to design and build boats out of cardboard and then race them against each other on the day of the event.  Lake Effect Leaders typically form a team to participate in the event and show their support for BMC.
