All Lake Effect Leaders are members of AmeriCorps VISTA.  Many of the Leaders’ benefits come from our affiliation with AmeriCorps.  The benefits Leaders receive during their term of service include:

  • Living Stipend (Set at 105% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines for the area you’re serving)
    Yearly Living Allowance is $11,880
  • Health Coverage

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or an End of Service Stipend

  • Student Loan Forbearance or Deferment During Service
    Leaders may be eligible to postpone the repayment of their qualified student loans through an action called loan forbearance.  Learn more about loan forbearance here
  • Interest Accrual Benefit
    AmeriCorps will pay any interest that accrued on qualified student loans during your term of service.  Learn more here

Unique Benefits of Lake Effect Leaders

  • Support securing low-cost housing
    Lake Effect Leaders will work with members to coordinate roommates, suggest apartments, and speak with landlords about reduced rent options
  • Professional Development
    Our project offers a comprehensive training program that allows members to further develop their skills and abilities
  • Serving with a cohort
    Leaders serve with approximately 30 members who are placed at nearby organizations.  Our Leaders have the benefit of developing a support system with fellow Leaders who understand the challenges members encounter
